Key Findings & Takeaways

What the Data Tells Us

  • High scorers are also efficient scorers. The top 5 PPG leaders all shoot above 47% from the field, challenging the notion that high-volume scorers sacrifice efficiency.
  • Free throw generation separates elite scorers. Players like Luka DončiΔ‡ (8.7 FTA/g) and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (9.3 FTA/g) consistently draw contact, making free throws a major part of their scoring.
  • Versatility is common at the top. Multiple players in the top 25 average 5+ rebounds AND 5+ assists, blurring traditional positional roles.
  • Victor Wembanyama is an outlier in every dimension. Despite being only #19 in PPG, Wembanyama leads all top-25 scorers in blocks (2.6) and rebounds (11.1), showing a defensive impact no other scorer approaches.
  • EFF rating vs. raw PPG can diverge significantly. Norman Powell (#22 in PPG at 23.0) has a lower EFF (19.2) than several lower-ranked scorers, reflecting fewer contributions outside of scoring.
